Cow’s milk is an essential food product in the diets of many individuals. However, with greater prevalence of lactose
intolerance globally in recent years and rising consumer concerns for environmental sustainability, plant-based milk may
be the solution to these issues.
According to various research articles, production of dairy products (mainly milk) has serious negative effects on the
environment due to its substantial amount of direct greenhouse gas emissions, water usage and land requirements (
Naranjo et al., 2020
). In fact, contribution to about four percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, 10 percent of global risk
for anthropogenic eutrophication and six percent of acidification, allowed dairy production to rank second in greenhouse
gas emissions, right after meat and meat products (
Noya et al., 2018
).
In contrast, production of plant-based milk (also known as dairy alternatives) uses lesser amounts of water and have
lower greenhouse gas emissions, suggesting that switching to plant-based milk will likely improve environmental
sustainability. For example, it has been reported that oat milk production generates 16 to 41 percent lesser greenhouse gas
emissions and energy usage than dairy production (
Röös, Patel, & Spångberg, 2016
).
Hence, here at Nature Milk Co. , our mission is to help you make the switch towards plant-based milks
for a healthier version of you and the environment!
