Emergency help for all
creatures great and small

Who We Are

Kyiv Animal Rescue Group is a team of volunteers with wide experience in industrial alpinism, professional digging and climbing. We have teamed together to save animals from emergencies in our native city. Since 2014 we saved thousands of animals both home pets and strays. Our rescued animal range expanded from usual city animals like cats, dogs to wild creatures such as moose, deer, endangered predator birds and our location range from Kyiv to other regions in Ukraine. We'd like to emphasize that we are NOT a government provided service - we exist purely on charity.

At the moment of the russian war against Ukraine, the rescue team is conducting the same activities as before the war.

FAQ on Emergency Situations

If a cat got on a tree, do not rush to call us immediately. Usually within 24 hours, 80% of cats that climbed a tree descend on their own. If you start getting a cat from a tree immediately, when it just climbed a tree and did not have time to calm down, its' behavior can be unpredictable: it can start climbing higher until it is at the top of the tree, or, conversely, jump down from a thin branch out of fear and get hurt.

If a cat has fallen from heights and is sitting on the facade of the house, call us immediately. Brick and concrete are not the best support for cat paws, it's not wood. Hypothermia and injury are very probable. If cat is stuck in the window in "ventilation mode”, and the owners are not at home, call us as soon as possible, and it is necessary to provide access to one of the apartments above the stuck cat, or to the roof of the house, to hang a rope on which the rescuer will work. If a cat has fallen into the ventilation, determine as accurately as possible what floor level it is sitting on. It is very likely that to save it we will have to break through the wall. It is also necessary to provide access to the roof and attic, to descent a video camera into the utilities system. If a cat fell into the basement of a building, find the keys to the basement and make sure that it did not jump back out of there. Close all vents leading into the basement tightly.

If a bat flew in to your place, then there are two options for action:
  1. Open windows and curtains, turn off the lights. The bat will fly out within an hour.
  2. If a bat has not yet flown out, on the contrary, turn on the lights, wait until the bat sits on some surface, cover it with a box or cloth on top and let it go free. It is advisable to carry a bat with gloves. By themselves, they do not attack people, but if it is carelessly taken with bare hands, it can bite.
If you are not planning to catch a bat, you do not need to turn on the lights, it can hide behind furniture and fly out only the next night. All types of bats in Ukraine are in the Red Book and killing them is prohibited by law. One bat eats about 2,000 mosquitoes per night. All bats living with us are insectivorous, they do not attack people, they do not drink blood. We understand that some people have a phobia - an unreasonable fear of bats. If you are one of these people and cannot overcome your fear to release a bat that has flown in to your house, the Animal Rescue Team can help (but only after handling calls where there is an immediate threat to the life of an animal).

The Animal Rescue Team may trap a cat and then hand it over to an applicant (for treatment, placement, return home) if one of the following conditions met:
  • The cat is on the street, but approaches a person for food at a distance of no more than 2-3 meters.
  • The cat is on the street, doesn't approach for food, but you can quietly approach it at a distance of 2-3 meters.
  • A cat younger than 2.5 months (a kitten of this age can be overtaken or outwitted).
  • The cat is in the basement (attic) of a building, in another isolated room (trapping is carried out by a group of three people, it takes time to prepare the group).
It is impossible to catch a cat with our forces if it does not come closer than three meters and it is impossible to approach it closer than three meters and it does not run away to the basement, from which there are keys available (or the permission to remove the lock).

  1. A kitten that applicants want to adopt or find a home for (team will depart in the next 2-3 days if a kitten is not in danger);
  2. Wounded or sick animal (the team will depart immediately, after the end of the processing of the current call, but no later than the end of the day);
  3. Runaway domestic cat (the team will depart on the day of the application or the next day).
  4. Scheduled capture for sterilization (we do not catch pregnant cats for sterilization, we do not conduct scheduled capture in the basement); the group will depart for such calls in free time from other calls).

  • To catch a cat, you must have a reliable carrier (not a bag, not a picnic basket). To catch two cats, two carriers. Two cats in the same carrier are not allowed unless they are kittens under 3 months of age. You can use our carrier by prior arrangement and only for transporting the cat from the place of capture to the place of further stay.
  • If capture is carried out on the street, and the cat approaches for food, one day before the capture, do not feed it and do not allow others to feed it as well. When the usual environment changes (namely: the appearance of a person with a net nearby), a not very hungry cat will prefer not to approach the food.
  • It is strongly not recommended to catch a cat on your own if you do not have confidence in success. We will not be able to catch a cat that has already been attempted to be caught and intimidated. If such an attempt has taken place, it should be reported in advance. It is not advisable to carry out the next catching attempt in the next three days.
  • If it is necessary to capture a group of animals, it should be remembered that under normal conditions, the probability of successive capture of the first cat from the group is 90%, the second - 50%, the third - 10%. Cats notice that their relatives are taken away and become more careful.
  • Catching a group of kittens is more expedient, if possible, in the basement, for the reasons indicated in the previous paragraph.
  • When catching one cat from a large group, you should have food supplies with you with the expectation of feeding all the cats in the group, because there is a possibility that the food will be eaten before the required animal approaches.
  • It is recommended to establish the routes of the cat and the direction of its flight in case of danger in advance.
Trapping a cat in the basement
  1. Find the keys to the basement in advance and take them for at least 5 hours.
  2. Make sure that the cat needed for trapping actually climbed into the basement.
  3. Before the rescuers arrive, securely close all ventilation ducts and other exits from the basement using improvised means.
Trapping cats on the street with food
  1. The representative of the Team takes a position with a net 2-3 meters from the feeding place of the cats.
  2. The applicant lays out the food in the indicated place (not under bushes, eaves or low-hanging branches).
  3. The applicant calls the cats and moves away in the opposite direction from the one where the representative of the Team is standing.
Failure to follow any of these rules can lead to failure in capturing, but even with full adherence to all instructions, one cannot be 100% sure of success, because cats are unpredictable animals.

FAQ on Animals

All city and private shelters for cats and dogs have been overcrowded for a long time and accept animals extremely rarely, after much persuasion, or if you are lucky, and on that very day one of the residents of the shelter found a home.

If you want to transfer the found animal to a shelter and cannot do it on your own, you need to find a shelter yourself, persuade its owners to accept the animal, and only after that call us for help in catching and transporting.

We may refuse to transport an animal if there are more urgent calls at that time. Therefore, the cat can be delivered to the shelter simply by taxi, and to transport a dog, you can try to contact the city service “Zoodopomoga”, and if they refuse, then wait until we are free.

Sick or injured animals are treated by veterinarians. We are not veterinarians and can only provide first aid, after which we will deliver the animal to a veterinary clinic under your responsibility.

If you've just found a sick animal and want to hand it over to us, we are forced to refuse such a trip, because our priority task is “rescuing animals in emergency situations, from where they cannot get out on their own or with the help of caring people (without the use of special skills and equipment).”

This means that you, as a caring person who has found a sick cat or dog, can take them to a veterinary clinic yourself without resorting to our help (an exception is the case when the applicant is ready to take care of the animal, but physically cannot get ahold of it - the animal is under stress, bites or runs away, in which case we help with trapping and hospitalization).

“But I noticed you fundraisung money for the treatment of an injured cat, is the cat I found is not worth it?” some ask.

Here's our answer. We fundraise money for the treatment of an animal in exceptional cases, namely, when we were left with a request to save an animal in an emergency. After extracting the animal from a hard-to-reach place, it turned out to be injured and unable to survive on its own on the street. Of course, we will not leave the rescued animal, we will fundraise money for its treatment and it will go to live with one of us at home (where there are already huge numbers of them) or for paid shelter (for which there is always not enough money). But these are extreme, exceptional cases, and this cannot continue for a long time (in any case, until the level of accommodation of already rescued animals is equal to zero).

In Kyiv and the region there are a number of bird shelters (just like us, working on a voluntary basis and without state support), which accept birds upon possibility. Some of the birds are released into the wild after treatment (which cannot be done with cured cats and dogs), some, the most seriously injured and unable to survive in nature, remain in the shelter forever.

Sometimes shelters stop accepting birds (usually during the fledgling season, when the shelter is full, or for quarantine). Sometimes the reception of certain types of birds is closed, most often these are crows and pigeons - there are a lot of them and they simply do not have time to build aviaries for them. Very rarely shelters take swifts - feeding and nursing one swift is a very laborious and costly project, and it is almost impossible for one person to feed more than five swifts.

If you handed over a bird to us, sooner or later it will be transferred to one of the bird shelters (or released if it has got really quickly cured). If the reception of this species of birds is temporarily closed in the shelter, and we have the opportunity to keep it for a while, then we will also be able to accept it. (Only one of the Team's rescuers keeps birds at home and she does not have the opportunity to take many birds at once and for a long time).

If bird shelters are overcrowded, the reception is closed for an unlimited time, and we do not have places where we can place a bird, then we are forced to refuse to accept a bird (despite the fact that we did accept a similar one from someone yesterday).

An EXCEPTION is swans. Swans are accepted by the "Mezhyhirya" zoo at any time, and we are ready to help with the capture and transportation of sick or injured swans there.

Bats are listed in the Red Book, and they occupy very little space at home. There are three people on the Team who know how to keep and feed bats. Therefore, if you find an exhausted, injured or weakened bat (or the bat is healthy, but the temperature outside is below +5 or the rainy season), call us and one of us will come and pick it up.

Hedgehogs also take up little space, and after treatment and rehabilitation, they can be released into the wild. Therefore, if you find an injured, injured or sick hedgehog, you can contact us (but only if you yourself absolutely cannot deal with the situation yourself).

If you find an exotic animal in the city, such as a brightly colored snake or a tarantula, contact us (and do not try to pick it up yourself if you are not sure of its safety). Exotic animals and invertebrates are kept by a few people, and the owner is usually found within week.

Of the wild animals in Kyiv and the region, foxes, hares, beavers, muskrats, raccoon dogs, roe deer, and moose are usually those who can get in trouble.

Small animals are accepted by the "Lunnaya Dolina" shelter, larger animals are taken in by the Mezhyhirya Zoo or the Kyiv Zoo.

An exception is moose. A wounded moose cannot be treated or kept at any of the institutions in Kyiv or the region. A healthy moose, accidentally caught in the city, can be sedated and taken to the forest. A moose that has been hit by a car, unfortunately, is usually impossible to save.
