We focus on issues that unlock progress on gender equality.

UN Women is a global champion for women and girls. We work to ensure that they have the same rights and opportunities as men and boys, and that they are able to fully participate in all spheres of life. We strive to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls, and work to empower them to take control of their own lives and contribute to the development of their communities and countries.

A Brief History

UN Women is the United Nations agency for gender equality and the empowerment of women. It was established in 2011 through the merger of four previously existing UN agencies, and has a mandate to focus specifically on these issues. UN Women works to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women globally through policy advocacy, research, and partnerships. Its key areas of focus include ending violence against women and girls, increasing women's participation in political and economic decision-making, and promoting women's rights in the context of peace and security. The organization also supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in relation to gender equality and women's empowerment.
