BAKHMUT

The city of champagne and roses

Bakhmut is the oldest historical and cultural center of Donbas (founded in 1571). Dozens of buildings of the late XIX century have been preserved here, there is a famous champagne factory and a room-museum of Easter egg making, a local history museum and a sports complex "Metallurg", where athletes of the Paralympic team of Ukraine train. During decommunization, the city was returned to its historical name, until 2016 Bakhmut was called Artemivsk.

Salt mines "Artemsil"

Salt from Bakhmut is exported all over the world. To see the salt mine and the largest underground concert hall in the world, as well as to learn about the history of salt mining, you need to get to the city of Soledar near Bakhmut. A unique festival of arts "Salt Symphony" is held at a depth of 300 meters in the salt mine of the "Artemsil" enterprise, and respiratory diseases are treated in the speleosanatorium of mine workings.

Murals

" There are landscapes of Ukraine, ornaments of Petrykivka painting, stylized embroidery. And in the center there is a falcon, which symbolizes the emblem of Ukraine. I have long studied the question whether the trident can be interpreted as a falcon. There is no direct evidence of this, but many say that our coat of arms represents a falcon flying down for prey or guarding its territory. Therefore, we wanted to take something national and combine it with elements of wildlife," says Yana Vovk, director of the creative group.
"I come here, just to sit and breathe and think about life," 79 year old Mykhailo told Reuters, sitting in a peaked cap under a leafy tree. "These murals are all about freedom, and are so calming at the same time, yes."

in 2022, Bakhmut got a lot of exposure in the media
but not for a good reason

Most Ukrainians didn't believe that russia would invade our country on full-scale (the hybrid war has been going on since 2014). This is absurd, isn't it? The world can't allow such a thing to happen in the 21st century.
Before the russian invasion in February, Bakhmut was home to around 70,000 people, and was known for its salt mines and sparkling wine production. Now it is battered, and largely lifeless.

"This is where the craziness of the russian command is most evident," Mr Zelenskr said in his nightly address from Kyiv. "Day after day, for months, they are driving people to their deaths there, concentrating the highest level of artillery strikes."

Analysts say the city has little military value in itself, though if it were to fall, it would bring other cities back within range of russian artillery and help change the narrative of a conflict in which Moscow's forces have been gradually retreating.
