Kaunas - the heart of Lithuania

Kaunas city center

Location and introductions

Kaunas is the second biggest city in Lithuania, located in the central part of Lithuania, around 120 km away from the geographical centre of Europe (as established in 1989). During the times when our current capital Vilnius was claimed by Poland, Kaunas was a chosen temporary capital of Lithuania. There is a song about Kaunas being the heart of Lithuania.

Kaunas is colorful city, famous by its street art. The city is famous for its Interwar architecture which was awarded the European Heritage label and is on its way to UNESCO. Kaunas is the only city in the world where so much of the style of the buildings has survived to the present day. (Source)
