Meet Ntokozo Shila 🇿🇦! Originally from South Africa and currently living in Gauteng, Ntokozo is someone who enjoys curling up with a good book or catching up on her favorite series during her free time.

Before joining the Delac Foundation, Ntokozo Shila was studying software development at university, but had to drop out during her third year due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite this setback, her passion for coding never faded.

In fact, her experience of failure reignited her motivation to keep learning. She decided to pick herself up and explore a new coding language — JavaScript — which wasn’t part of her original curriculum. That’s when she came across SheCodes, through videos by a UK-based TikToker who became a software developer through the workshops. Inspired by the story and eager for a second chance, Ntokozo Shilatook the leap and joined SheCodes to start a fresh chapter in her tech journey. 👩‍💻

“What motivated me was my failure. Failing to continue my studies due to unforeseen circumstances encouraged me to continue learning how to code and start a new language altogether. I always wanted to learn JavaScript, but it wasn't part of my qualification.”

Ntokozo Shila’s experience with SheCodes was both exciting and eye-opening. She found the workshops easy to follow thanks to the clear and simple way the lessons were explained. For her, every new video felt like a step forward — each one helped her understand exactly what was expected and made her eager to keep learning. ✨

“It was easy for me to understand the content because Matt explained the work in a way that I had never had anyone explain a certain concept or lesson to me. I was always excited for the next video because I knew I would get a clear understanding of what is expected from me. “

One of the most memorable moments for Ntokozo Shila was working on her weather app project. It turned out to be her biggest challenge, especially when understanding objects in JavaScript. The project took longer than others, and she had to rewatch the videos more than twice. But through extra practice and determination, she pushed through and gained a solid understanding of the concept. 💪

With SheCodes, Ntokozo Shila gained the skills and confidence she needed to step into the tech world. She now works as a Junior Solutions Consultant at a customer service company that sells CRM software to other businesses. In her role, she works with both front-end and back-end technologies and spends most of her time building apps and working with APIs to help different systems communicate with each other. 🔧💻

SheCodes played a key role in helping her land this position. During her interview, she was asked about APIs, and thanks to her weather app project from the workshops, she had a real-world example to talk about. That project became her stepping stone into a career where working with APIs is now part of her daily routine. 🚀

“I actually got this job because of my weather app project. In my interview, they asked me about APIs, what I know, and how they work, and I spoke about my weather app project. I now work with APIs 90% of the time, and it has played a big role since I started.”

Ntokozo Shila has some helpful advice for anyone starting their coding journey with SheCodes: Be patient with yourself. She reminds future students that learning to code isn’t a race — it’s about truly understanding the concepts, not rushing through them. 💡

Looking back, she wishes she had slowed down and taken more time with each lesson. “You don’t learn with speed but with understanding,” she says — and that mindset makes all the difference.

Beyond her own success, SheCodes has also given Ntokozo Shila the chance to inspire others. She’s encouraged several people to join the workshops, and seeing them work toward their goals has been an incredibly rewarding experience. 💜
