University degree vs SheCodes

SheCodes online courses are much more affordable and flexible with a shorter time commitment than a traditional computer science university degree

A traditional university degree has been the standard in education for generations. With increasing costs, high competition, the rise of self-education, and readily available information online, this is starting to change.ย

Many of our coding students still ask us if they will have success in the tech field without a traditional degree. ๐Ÿค” Weโ€™re happy to answer that here!

Do you need a degree to be a developer?

No, you donโ€™t need a degree to be a developer! Everyone can learn to code through a curriculum like SheCodes. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป The need for developers, IT support, and engineers is so high, that it has become common for companies to hire without a computer science degree or even any degree at all. ย

The IT and tech world changes so fast, that those in the industry have to stay up-to-date. This has increased the availability of online certifications and training. ๐ŸŒ Now, anyone from around the world can learn how to code from their home, with the help of coding workshops like SheCodes.

International tech companies like Google and Apple have led the way by officially announcing that job applicants do not need a degree. Hiring managers want to be certain that you can do the job, not what degree you have. A portfolio full of customized projects (check out projects coded from scratch by our students) will show that you have the coding skills for the job.

How does SheCodes compare to a computer science degree?

A university degree and the SheCodes online coding courses both give you portfolio-ready projects, access to knowledgeable instructors, a community of learners, and homework so you can practice your new coding skills. ๐Ÿ’ช ๐Ÿ’ป

At SheCodes, students can ask for homework and project extensions whenever life gets too busy. Our coding classes have a flexible schedule. Classes can be taken on nights, weekends, or whenever you have time outside of your schedule. โฐ Like professional coders, students have access to the internet during final projects. At a traditional university, deadlines and schedules are very strict. You have to be sitting in class on time and most professors donโ€™t give homework or project extensions.

One of the biggest differences is that the average attendance cost of a bachelor's degree in the USA is $35,331. ๐Ÿค‘ Online courses are much more affordable.

The SheCodes coding workshops teach front-end development, focusing on HTML, CSS, Javascript, and React. You can go from a total beginner to a pro in just 8 weeks full time and 6 months part-time in SheCodes Pro. The time commitment of a traditional degree is 3 or 4 years.ย

Front-end development is perfect for those who like to be creative. Itโ€™s also a great bridge to UX/UI work. Many SheCodes graduates find jobs in front-end development and enjoy the variety of work and the perks that a job in tech usually offers. Some companies will offer training in other languages while you are on the job. Read our success stories to learn more about what our wonderful alumni accomplished after learning with SheCodes.ย

What if I already have a degree but want to code?

Many of our students already have a degree in an unrelated subject but want a change. Our graduates include teachers, marketers, managers, and more who successfully made the transition to a new career in tech.

Some tech companies may want to see a degree, even if itโ€™s not directly related to the industry. Every company right now is a tech company and even if you work in other fields like UX, content, or marketing, some basic coding skills will come in handy and make you stand out. The additional training, skills, and portfolio youโ€™ll leave with after completing your SheCodes courses will prove that you have the dedication and skills to get the job done.

Here's what our students say

5/5 - Highly recommended

SheCodes opened the door that I was so eager to find. I've been wanting to learn to code for a long time but I felt that since I did not have a computer science degree I would not be able to learn coding for front end developement. SheCodes Basics proved to me that I am capable to pursuing a different path and I feel prepared for moving to more advanced techniques! Also I am so happy to find a community of people that helps you to understand or get out of the knot you made in your code (even after you finish your course :)) I can't stress enough that if you feel that you want to learn coding, this is the right place!

After attending the introductory workshop session, I immediately decided to sign up. My university degree contained programming modules, however I still was not able to understand how to write code on my own. This workshop has been the first time I have able to comprehend the code I am writing. The format of the lessons were easy to follow and the slack community is extremely supportive.

I recommend this class to everyone! I have always thought that coding is too difficult to learn outside of a college degree. This class has shown me that I am my biggest obstacle. Go for it!

5/5 - Highly recommended

This is a great workshop if you're looking to dip your toes into the coding world but aren't ready to commit to a full time coding boot camp or university degree. Matt is an amazing teacher and really good at breaking down concepts and explaining things thoroughly. I'm excited to keep building on my coding knowledge and eventually make a career change!

5/5 - Highly recommended

In three weeks, I was doing more in coding than my boyfriend, who is halfway through his computer science degree! I only did the three-week course for familiarization with terms so that I can be a better member on my team at work when collaborating with the developers. Still, I honestly enjoyed it so much I'm considering upgrading to one of the longer courses!

5/5 - Highly recommended

SheCodes was the perfect introduction for me to the world of coding. I've been interested for a while but never took the plunge, thinking learning code would take a university degree. The 3-week basics course was perfect for me to dip my toes in the water and I am excited for what's to come next! Thanks SheCodes team :)
